One form of credit is the “The Continuing Education Unit” or CEU. The CEU is a nationally recognized method of quantifying the time spent in a class during professional development and training activities as shown below. Ten hours of instruction = 1.0 CEU. One hour of instruction = 0.1 CEU.
The primary purpose of the CEU is to provide a permanent record of the educational accomplishments of an individual who has completed significant non-credit educational and career enhancement experiences.
Benefits of Offering CE Credit:
-
Improves quality of an educational activity—an accrediting organization requires strict adherence to specific criteria from the early planning stages, through implementation of the activity, through post-activity record keeping.
-
Enhances the ability to gather data on the educational activity—for many courses, the only way to gather target audience and evaluation data is through the continuing education registration process. The availability of CE motivates learners to attend a course, and adds incentive to complete documentation.
-
Increases chances of reaching a target audience—without a doubt, continuing education accreditation adds value to course offerings and acts as an incentive for busy professionals who need to make the most of their time. Given a choice between courses with or without credits, it simply makes good sense to opt for those that provide this additional benefit for time invested.
-
Helps constituents maintain professional status—the challenges facing a trained work force are more serious and complex than ever before. The knowledge and skills needed to meet new work challenges will be developed through continuing education programs. By accrediting programs, participants receive a quality learning experience and earn credit or contact hours that will maintain their professional status.
